In chapter five of Inside Cyber Warfare 3rd Edition, I wrote extensively about the work of a Russian mercenary outfit known then as the Wagner Group, now as Africa Corps.
For many years, they were the private army of Russian oligarch Yevgeny Prigozhin. They were responsible for the bulk of the fighting in Ukraine from the invasion of 2022 until shortly after Prigozhin was killed along with Dmitry Utkin and several other Wagner commanders after a hidden bomb detonated onboard a private Wagner Group jet shortly after takeoff on August 23, 2023. Command of the Wagner Group forces was then transferred to Russia’s Ministry of Defense.
They are notorious for human rights violations over the years, including the following examples:
In Syria, Wagner Group members were filmed laughing as they used a sledgehammer to break the bones of a Syrian Army deserter before dismembering his body and cutting off his head
In the Central African Republic, Wagner Group forces tortured, raped, and murdered civilians
In Libya, they booby-trapped civilian homes with explosives attached to toilet seats and teddy bears
In Ukraine, they participated in the Bucha massacre where, for 30 days, over 400 civilians, including 9 children, were killed and buried in mass graves
In 2024, while I was working on getting my book through tech review and final edits, a contact in Eastern Europe who knew that I had written about the group, sent me a complete spreadsheet of all 49,243 members, including:
Personnel number
Full name
Call sign
Date of Birth
Number of Combat Deployments
Latest deployment location
Contract renewal date

As we’ve just passed the second anniversary of Prigozhin’s fateful March on Moscow on June 23, 2023 and coming up on the anniversary of Vladimir Putin’s retribution 60 days later, I thought it would be the perfect time to do my first subscription drive with this special dataset, taken from the former Wagner Group headquarters in St. Petersburg, as a gift.
How To Get This Dataset
If you become an annual subscriber for $99 between now and July 31st, I’ll email you the full spreadsheet.
If you’re already an Annual subscriber or a Founding Member and would like a copy of this dataset, please email me with your request before the end of this month.
