AI Experts Differ Widely On Existential Risk
A sample survey of respondents to the Future of Life Institute's Open Letter To Pause AI shows wide disparity of opinions
On March 22, 2023, the Future of Life Institute published "Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter" that asked for a six month pause on any AI development more powerful than GPT-4. The one page letter stressed that "... recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control."
